We are in a joyous period as we celebrate the eight days of Chanukah (Hanukkah). Each night, as we light the candles of the menorah, we are illuminated with warmth – both physically and emotionally..
During Chanukah, We know we will reflect upon the thousands of men, women, and children in Israel who do not feel that warmth or are illuminated by the light…there simply is too much darkness in their lives. The latest poverty report released on November 2nd by the Israel National Insurance Institute revealed that 1 in 4 people in Israel live below the poverty line – with every third child suffering from hunger.
The reality of the situation is heart-rending. Too many people in Israel live a life of great suffering; too many children are in a daily fight to ward off hunger; too many families struggle to purchase the basic necessities needed to survive; too many elderly people roam the streets looking for food. They find themselves fighting a losing battle against the harmful effects of poverty. To them, Chanukah may be a Holiday of light – but it is one devoid of joy or warmth.
